Makeup Spending Plan Update #1 + Empties

It's been an entire month since I started my spending plan for the year! The overall goal is to buy less and use what I have more, and that's pretty much what I've done. A month has gone by pretty quickly and painlessly, but there's no reason it should have been hard. If you saw my recent haul video, you will know that I dropped money on a ton of new products right before I started, and I have a lot of things that I am just getting into testing. Not to mention, I realize that my coupons to The All Natural Face as an exception to the rules is a pretty big one. A little money goes a long way there, so I will still be getting a bunch of new products to try. I also found that it was pretty easy to use up 3 products, so I made it harder. Now, to earn a purchase, I need to use up 8 products, or 20 samples.

In the mean time, I really got into using things up. I made extra efforts to use products, and actually have been adhering to a skincare routine much better than normal. I always love doing my makeup, so I didn't have to make much extra effort there. But I definitely used up samples that had been sitting around for too long. I've divided up my empties into skincare, haircare and makeup. A very important note about empties: unlike the rest of my blog, not everything shown here is recommended in terms of ingredients. Sometimes I buy something and later learn about an ingredient I don't like in it, and sometimes I am given things that don't meet my standards or I wouldn't repurchase because of ingredients. Those products are marked with a †. For example, regular Aura Cacia Sweet Almond Oil has tocopheryl acetate in it — though they do offer a USDA Organic variety that is 100% pure — and I prefer oils that don't have anything added.

Haircare (1) Acure Pure Mine + Enchinacea Shampoo and Conditioner, (2) Original Sprout Miracle Detangler Spray, (3) The Name is Product

I've also included full size products that have gone bad before I could use them all up. These don't count towards any new product, but there's obviously no reason to keep them around. This is exactly what I want to be avoiding, I hate wasting product!

Products that expired: (1) Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques Concealer, (2) Priia Creamy Mineral Under Eye Concealer, (3) Acure Eye Cream

So here is the total for this month:

Products used up: 16 (2 purchases earned)
Samples used up: 14 (no purchases earned, number will be added to next time's total)

And here is my running list of purchases:

1. Lucy Minerals Foundation in Cream

2. Lucy Minerals Finishing Powder in Cream

3.

4.

5.

Newly earned:

6.

7.

So that is a summary of what I've used up and bought in the past month. If you are participating in any spending ban, or have any recent purchases or empties, I'd love to hear about it!

  1. Great post! Just curious, what about Aura Cacia's sweet almond oil didn't meet your standards?

    1. Never mind, I read your earlier post on oil and figured it out. I had no idea they added preservatives to these! Good to know.

    2. Not a preservative, per say, but Tocopheryl Acetate is added. This isn't a huge hazard, but I prefer the pure oil over the one with an additive when its just as readily available and affordable! I purchase the one from Now Foods, now. Here's a link on Tocopheryl Acetate: http://www.truthinaging.com/ingredients/tocopheryl-acetate

      Hope that helps!

    1. I realize now that might be a little misleading. It's not a bad product, its just there are purer options out there in the same price range!

    2. Definitely. It's a good reminder to alwaysalwaysalways check the ingredients though--I bought mine without checking because I just assumed it was pure oil...lesson learned!

    3. I have made lots of little mistakes over time like that... the good thing is you learn from them!

  4. Wow so many empties and great video :) I'm curious about this eye cream from Acure and as you said i really don't understand how can you avoid contact with eyes..oh well :) Which eye cream are you using now?

    1. It is nice, but you are not supposed to get it in your eyes, and it stings if you do. Thats just an issue for me because I can't totally avoid that, especially for a lotion. I do know that some other bloggers really like that cream.

I have a very sensitive eye area, and I get occasional bouts of eczema on my lids. When that happens I like to use jojoba oil because it is pure and non irritating. I also use Badger Damascus Rose Beauty Balm.

    1. Thanks :)

I have been doing it on the side a bit. I don't have a great camera and I'm not that used to talking in front of it, so its a little rough.

  6. You have used up so much stuff!
So far I've only used up a few items. It feels like it's taking forever.
I haven't purchased anything, which is good :)

    1. That's great! It is really hard to use up makeup especially. I did purchase the stuff from Lucy Minerals so far, but other than that I've been good! I am a bit crazy about using stuff up right now, especially skincare. I want to get to the point where I have one facial moisturizer, one eye balm, one body moisturizer, one cleanser, etc. because I go through that kind of thing frequently enough that I can try new stuff without having a ton at once! Makeup is going to be a lot harder...

  7. Why didn't I find your blog earlier!? Your. Blog. Is. Inspiring! And I'm on my way with this Spending-Plan thingy, because, last year, and at the beginning of 2013 too, I bought many stuffs, and ended up with being confused, how to make all those bottles empty! LOL. Stupidity.
So, thank you for reminding me again about emptying more! :))

    1. If you saw the note, I am a bit iffy on the ingredients. I think it works well, but it does contain an aluminum salt, and people can't seem to agree whether it actually absorbs in the skin or not. So I recommend avoiding it out of caution.
