I'm pretty excited to talk about Dr. Hauschka Translucent Bronze Concentrate, y'all. This is one of my favorite natural products I have tried yet. It's really, really fantastic and unique, and it does exactly what is should. Isn't that refreshing?
As you might already know, I have a history of buying, writing about, and obsessing over bronzers. I am naturally pretty pale, and am always looking for products that give that just-right glow. Subtle enough that it looks natural, but not so subtle that it doesn't make a difference. I've been a big fan of some of the mineral bronzers I've tried in the past, and really don't need anymore products. But I was so intrigued by a liquid bronzer that I had to try it. When I think of Dr. Hauschka, I think of an well-established, old-school skincare company that is carried at many health food stores, and I am pleasantly surprised that they have come up with something that feels a innovative and modern.
I thought the name "Translucent Bronze Concentrate" was a bit cumbersome, but now that I have tried the product, I think that's exactly what it is. The product "translucent" because it is very sheer, and lets your regular skin show through. And it is a "concentrate" because only a small amount is needed, and it is meant to be mixed into a foundation or moisturizer. I mix the concentrate with my Real Purity Health Glow Foundation on the back of my hand, then apply it with my Real Techniques Stippling Brush for perfectly even application. I notice this makes my foundation a bit sheerer in coverage, but I don't mind that because I use liquid foundation on days that I don't need heavy coverage. Not to mention, adding a bit of color reduces the appearance of redness and breakouts anyway. In the summer, I can see myself mixing this with my Badger face sunscreen. I've also tried this mixed in with my moisturizer on no makeup days, and loved the results.
The concentrate makes your complexion just tad darker, and has a sheer, natural finish. The texture is quite liquidy and thin, so it can be applied evenly without much effort. It absorbs right into your skin quickly and isn't sticky at all, much like a lotion. I really like that when I use this product alone, I don't feel like I'm covering my skin, as I do with powder bronzer. The color is a perfect brown; not orange at all. I think it has a bit of red in it, just like skin that actually has actually gotten some sun. More so than any bronzer I have tried, this is the best product for getting a natural looking tan. The scent that doesn't smell like anything in particular to me besides lotion, and isn't bothersome.
I am extremely impressed with the quality and performance of this bronzer. At almost $40 retail, it is on the expensive side, but totally worth it. I doubt there are any less expensive dupes with natural ingredients. I think a lot of you will really love it too, and I highly recommend this to anyone who likes to add a bit of color to their complexion.

ReplyDeleteLooks like Dermstore doesn't offer free shipping to Canada :( But I am excited to hear what you think of the Dr. Hauschka store!

Thanks for commenting, I have just been going through your blog and it is really great! Always like to find more natural beauty bloggers!
DeleteLooks great my only grumble with Dr Haushcka is that their products are full of alcohol. I think this looks like a summer must have great for mixing with light foundation too to get the right summer colour. x
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point, the alcohol in this might not be ideal, especially for dry skin. I think that if this did not have alcohol in it, they would have to use a synthetic preservative. So that's probably why they opted for alcohol. Weleda is another company that has alcohol in many of their products. I like both companies, but I understand some people's skin does much better with out it!
DeleteSounds perfect for summer! Love that it's subtle enough to use on pale skin and that it gives a glow, definitely a great alternative to mineral bronzing powders :) x

Yes, I think this is definitely going to be a summer favorite, but it's great now too! Thanks for commenting, I am excited to find another natural beauty blog :)
DeleteThis product would be perfect, if it wasn't for the fragrance (parfum.) Fragrance gets a 8 on the EWG skin deep cosmetics database. I think it is such an unnecessary ingredient that should not be used in so called "natural" products.
ReplyDeleteI agree that fragrance isn't necessary, but it is a mistake to assume that all fragrances are a very high hazard. Fragrance is ranked very high on the EWG database because many brands are allowed to hide a slew of chemicals under this ingredient, and are allowed to because of INCI standards. However, it is important to read about a company's individual fragrance standards. Many great natural companies have fragrance on the label, but use essential oils or other naturally sourced scents.
DeleteIn the case of Dr. Hauschka, here is what they say:
In Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products, this term indicates a combination of 100% pure, natural essential oils. Dr. Hauschka fragrances are proprietary blends of pure essential oils specifically developed for each product. European regulations require that we list our pure essential oil scents as "Fragrance (Parfum)" however no synthetic fragrance or perfume ingredients are ever used to scent Dr.Hauschka products.
And according to the skin deep database, essential oils all have lower safety ratings. I hope this demonstrates why we should not rely solely on the Skin Deep database to make our decisions about the safety of a product. I talk more about this, including fragrance, in my post on Weleda Skin Food:

That's really good to know! I have MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) and cannot use/be around ANY synthetic (and even some natural) fragrances, so I have to be EXTRA careful! :)
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that must be difficult! Of course natural fragrances can cause reactions if you are sensitive. Do you often try a sample of a product before purchasing to see if you react?
Deleteyeah, it stinks! I try samples whenever possible, but for a loooong time I did not wear, or use any beauty products at all... it was tough, especially being a makeupaholic and beauty product lover! Now that more companies are going green and using more natural, organic and pure ingredients, it is getting easier! I just had to return a facial scrub to Burt's bees. They are not my first choice for natural beauty products because they sold out to Clorox, but I was looking for a facial scrub while at Whole Foods. I read the ingredients and completely missed that it had fragrance in it. Not knowing whether that fragrance was natural or synthetic, I called and they told me it was in fact synthetic fragrance. They are refunding my money... great customer service! I wish they would make it clear on the ingredient list whether a fragrance is synthetic or natural. I think some brands do.
ReplyDeleteWow, I know Burts Bees doesn't have the highest standards, but it still is pretty bad for a company that markets itself as natural to be including synthetic fragrance. I have definitely seen some companies that advertise themselves as fragrance free, but can't think of any at the moment. Do you have a twitter? It is easier to communicate on there.
DeleteYes, I do... @ihugtrees I also have a couple of blogs. I don't get to do much with them at the moment. www.shandylikes.blogspot.com :)
ReplyDeleteGreat! Followed you. I will keep you in mind as I see fragrance free stuff.
